Hooptober Attempt Review #5

The Terminator (1984/2020)

Synopsis: Disguised as a human, a cyborg assassin known as a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) travels from 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton). Sent to protect Sarah is Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn), who divulges the coming of Skynet, an artificial intelligence system that will spark a nuclear holocaust. Sarah is targeted because Skynet knows that her unborn son will lead the fight against them. With the virtually unstoppable Terminator in hot pursuit, she and Kyle attempt to escape.

Like this one needs a synopsis...

We were inspired to re-watch Highlander after a conversation with friends, which gave me the idea of revisiting the other 80's movie I hated most in the World: The Terminator.

I didn't even consider this as a possibility for Hooptober. I mean, it's an action movie, right? It's speculative sci-fi if you really need to put it in a specific genre, right?

That is what I expected/remembered about The Terminator, but the longer we watched it, the more often I turned to lonelydumptruck and mused aloud, "This is horror, right? This feels like a horror movie." Which is how I roped him into helping with this review.

lonelydumptruck: There are horror elements to it, it's certainly shot like a horror movie. But "is it a horror movie or not?" It's not binary. And what else can you say about it? The cast is great. It's a great movie.

And, honestly, for the first time I agree with him. This movie is soooo much better than I remember it being. I loved the pacing, I loved the tension and, yes, I would peg it as sci-fi horror.

Available on: Amazon Prime and Hulu.
