Statler and Waldorf

Conan the Barbarian

We hit the RedBox Friday night and came back with Conan the Barbarian. The new one starring Khal Drogo.

I have seen the original Conan at least once, pieces of it several times, and it never really grabbed me. I like high fantasy, I was a big fan of loin-cloth movies as a teen, but I guess it like my action heros articulate even if the plot is not.

I really, really liked this one. It is beautifully shot and the fight scenes are incredible. They are very clear and the actions make sense. There is not a lot of the super-speed or super-slow motion bullshit. Two guys are fighting on horseback, they get about 4 swings before they have to regroup and see to their mounts.

One of the things that really grabbed me is that everyone had an American accent. That is so unusual in high fantasy. Usually the princess character, if not the villian, are English as a way to 'keep it classy'.

If this had come out 30 years ago, it would have been a slumber party staple. Highly recommended.
