My derby wife, Calamity, and I went to see Ani Difranco last night. It was at the big auditorium at the University which still manages to feel like an intimate space with great acoustics. Calamity got us seats in row B which were incredible. We got some strange reverb/feedback from the stand-up bass from time to time. I think we were so close we could hear his monitor!
It was really an awesome show! If you put a gun to my head, I couldn't name an Ani DiFranco song, but we had so much fun! She's tiny! Her guitars looked bigger that she was, and she changed guitars after every single song. It was wild. She was funny as hell too. She started playing one song and suddenly yelled "Fuck!", then cracked up laughing. "I just played a wrong chord!"
Calamity loves live music and is trying to support local theatre more often, so we're going to try to get together for things like this more often, and at least meet twice a month for drinks and to catch up. She also works three jobs and can't always get away from her three kids for a night on the town, but drinks should be doable. We're hoping we can skate together more in the Spring too.
